Career test vs psychometric test: what is the difference?
The short answer
A psychometric test measures something about you, such as interests, personality or reasoning, with a fixed scoring rule, published evidence that it works and usually a norm group. A career test uses such measures to link you to kinds of work. Aptitudo is a career test built on published models. It has no Indian norm group yet, so it describes how you answered and does not rank you.

Short facts
- Psychometrics is the science of measuring qualities of the mind, such as interests, personality and abilities.
- A complete psychometric test has a fixed scoring rule, published evidence that it is consistent and measures what it claims, and usually a norm group to compare you with.
- Holland's six interest types, known as RIASEC, have been used in career research since the 1950s.
- The Big Five is the most established model of personality in academic psychology.
- A percentile needs a norm group from the same population. No Indian norm group exists for Aptitudo yet, so it prints no percentiles.
What "psychometric" means
"Psychometric" means measuring the mind: interests, personality, abilities or values, with set questions and a set way of scoring them.
- Reliability: the test gives similar results when the same person takes it again soon after.
- Validity: there is evidence the test measures what it says it measures.
- Norms: the test has been taken by a large group like you, so your score can be placed against theirs.
The word is used loosely in India. A short online quiz and a carefully studied questionnaire are both sold as psychometric tests. What separates them is the evidence behind them.
What a career test is
A career test uses some of these measures to point you towards kinds of work that fit you.
Most career tests start with interests, because interests describe the work you would choose to do. Many add personality, values and short thinking tasks. The useful ones then link your answers to real careers and courses and tell you why.
So the two words overlap. A career test can be built on psychometric measures, and a psychometric test is not always about careers.
What Aptitudo uses
Aptitudo is built on published research models, and the methodology page names each one with its source.
- Interests: Holland's six interest types (RIASEC).
- Personality: the Big Five.
- Thinking strengths: four short timed tasks (pattern, spatial, numerical and speed) written against the CHC model of abilities.
- Work values: six values, following the O*NET work values framework.
- Readiness for working life, and real situations from Indian school and early work.
In Career Discovery the questions are written by Aptitudo against these models, and every adaptation for India is documented. Several free tests use published questionnaires as published: the Personality Snapshot, for example, is the twenty question Mini-IPIP, which is in the public domain. Others use a shorter selection of public domain IPIP items that we chose, or questions of our own. Your scores come from one fixed, versioned rule, and the same answers always give the same scores.
Why Aptitudo shows no percentiles
A percentile compares you with a large group who took the same test, and that group does not exist yet for Indian students on this test.
Building one needs a norming study, and none has begun. So every result describes your own answers and compares them only with your other answers. That is why the report never tells you where you stand against other students, and why it is careful to call a close result close.
How to judge any career test
Three checks tell you most of what you need to know, whichever test you choose.
- Does it name its models and sources, so a teacher or counsellor can look them up?
- Does it show the scores behind each result, rather than only a label?
- Does it say whom it compares you with? If it gives percentiles, ask which group of students they come from.
What any test cannot tell you
No test, psychometric or not, can tell you your marks in an exam, whether you will get a seat, or whether you will be happy in a job. A result describes you as you are now, and interests and habits change with age. Use it as one good input next to your marks, your experience and the people who know you.

Questions
Can I trust a psychometric test result?
Trust it as far as its evidence goes. A careful test publishes how consistent its scores are and what they have been checked against. Read any result as a description of how you answered on one day, not as a verdict.
Is Aptitudo a psychometric test?
No. It is a career test built on published research models: Holland's six interest types (RIASEC), the Big Five personality traits, the CHC model of thinking abilities and the O*NET work values framework. A full psychometric test also publishes evidence that it is consistent and measures what it claims, and compares you with a norm group. Aptitudo has not yet published a norm study or reliability figures for the questions it wrote, so it describes how you answered and never ranks you against other students.
What is the Mini-IPIP?
A twenty question Big Five questionnaire published by Donnellan and colleagues in 2006, built from the International Personality Item Pool. It is in the public domain. The free Personality Snapshot uses it.
Do I need a counsellor as well?
A counsellor helps you weigh a result against your marks, money, family and place. Aptitudo does not include a counsellor. Its report shows its reasons, so you, a parent, a teacher or a counsellor can check them.
