Guide
Which stream should I choose after 10th?
The short answer
Choose the stream whose subjects you would be glad to study every day for two years, not only the one whose careers sound impressive. Look at three things: what you enjoy doing, which subjects pull you, and how you go about your work. Talk to students already in that stream. A good career test shows your pattern and its reasons; the choice stays yours.

Short facts
- Most schools group Class 11 and 12 subjects into three streams: Science, Commerce, and Humanities, which is also called Arts.
- Your board, such as CBSE, publishes the subjects. Your school decides which combinations it offers.
- Engineering degrees usually need Mathematics and Physics in Class 12, and medicine needs Biology with Physics and Chemistry. The exam bodies set the exact rules.
- Chartered Accountancy does not need Commerce. ICAI, which runs the CA course, accepts students from any stream.
- Many degrees accept students from any stream, including most BA programmes and law through CLAT.
The three streams in brief
Each stream is a set of subjects, and each keeps some doors open more easily than others.
- Science: Physics and Chemistry, with Mathematics (PCM), Biology (PCB) or both. It is the usual route into engineering, medicine and the pure sciences. It also means a lot of daily problem solving and practical work.
- Commerce: Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics, often with Mathematics or Applied Mathematics. It leads naturally into BCom, CA, company secretary and cost accountant courses, economics, finance and management.
- Humanities: subjects such as History, Political Science, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, Economics and languages. It leads into law, psychology, journalism, design, teaching and public policy, among many others.
Three questions to ask yourself
Ask what you enjoy, which subjects pull you, and how you go about your work.
- What do you lose track of time doing: building and fixing things, working things out, making and expressing, helping and teaching, persuading and leading, or organising? These are the six interest types career research uses.
- Which school subjects do you enjoy learning, even when they are hard? Enjoying a subject and finding it easy are two different things, and both are worth knowing.
- How do you go about your work: do you keep a routine, finish what you start, and plan ahead? Every stream rewards this, and some rely on it heavily.
What a career test can add
A career test turns those questions into a pattern you can look at, with the scores behind it.
Career Discovery looks at your interests, a few short thinking tasks, your personality and your values, then shows how well Science, Commerce and Arts fit your answers, and which career families fit, with the reason for each. Checking which subjects those careers need shows you which stream keeps them open.
If you want a free start, Interest Explorer shows how much each of six kinds of work appeals to you, and Subject Sorter asks two quick questions about each of your subjects and hands your answers back to you.
Marks, family and friends
Marks matter, but they are not the whole answer.
A high mark in Mathematics tells you that you can do it. It does not tell you that you want two more years of it. Your parents know you well and know your family's situation, so share your reasons with them and listen to theirs. Choosing a stream because your friends are taking it is common, and it is rarely a good reason on its own.
Can I change my stream later?
Sometimes, and more doors stay open than most students think.
Some schools allow a change early in Class 11, so ask yours. After Class 12, many degrees accept students from any stream, such as most BA programmes, law through CLAT and many design courses. A few routes are strict: engineering needs Mathematics and Physics, and medicine needs Biology. CA stays open from any stream.
Before you fill in the form
A few small steps make the decision much clearer.
- Talk to two students who are already in Class 11 in each stream you are considering.
- Look through the Class 11 textbooks of each stream for an hour.
- List three careers you are curious about and check which subjects each one needs.
- Take a career test before the decision, not after it.
What any test cannot tell you
No test can tell you which stream to choose, or how you will do in Class 11 and 12. Your interests and habits can change, and the right stream also depends on money, your school's options and where you live. Read any result as one input, next to your marks and the people who know you.

Questions
Is Science the safest stream?
It is the stream that leads straight into engineering and medicine, which need particular Science subjects. It is not a safe choice if you dislike those subjects, because two years of PCM or PCB is a lot of daily work. Commerce and Humanities lead to many careers students value, such as law, CA, design and psychology.
Can I do CA without Commerce?
Yes. ICAI, which runs the Chartered Accountancy course, accepts students from any stream. Commerce subjects such as Accountancy make the early stages more familiar.
Is there a test to choose my stream?
No test should choose for you. A career test can show what you enjoy, how you work and what you value, and which kinds of work fit those answers, so you decide with more to go on. Aptitudo's Interest Explorer and Subject Sorter are free; Career Discovery is the full report.
When should I decide?
Before your school's Class 11 admission form is due, with a few weeks to talk it over. Many students start thinking about it during Class 10.
