Career test after 10th: what it shows and when to take it

The short answer

After Class 10, a career test can show what you enjoy, how you tend to work and what you want from work, and which courses and careers fit those answers. Take it before you choose your Class 11 subjects. Aptitudo's Career Discovery takes about fifty five minutes and costs ₹999, paid only if you open the report. Nine shorter tests are free.

Short facts

  • Career Discovery: about fifty five minutes, ₹999, or ₹1,499 with Plus, paid after you finish and only if you open the report.
  • Nine free tests, each taking about three to twenty minutes.
  • Built on published models: Holland's six interest types (RIASEC), the Big Five, the CHC model of thinking abilities and O*NET work values.
  • Open to students aged twelve and over. Under 18, a parent agrees before Career Discovery starts, and before a free test's result is shown.
  • English only.

When to take one

Take it before the stream decision, while you can still act on what it shows.

The weeks after your board exams pass quickly, and the Class 11 form often arrives before you have thought it through. Taking a career test during Class 10, or in the gap before admissions, gives you time to read the result, talk about it at home and look into the courses it points to.

What to look for in a career test

Look for named models, a clear price, reasons you can check, and honesty about what it compares you with.

  • The models it uses, named with their sources.
  • How long it takes, and what you get for free before you pay anything.
  • Reasons shown for every result, not just a label or a type.
  • Who can see your answers, and where they are stored.
  • Whether it compares you with other students, and if so, which students.

What Career Discovery covers

Career Discovery looks at six areas of you, then shows the streams and career families that fit your answers.

  • Interests: the work you would choose when nobody is watching.
  • Thinking strengths: short pattern, spatial, number and speed tasks.
  • Personality: how you tend to act, using the Big Five.
  • Values: what you want work to give back.
  • Readiness: how you think about and plan for working life.
  • Real situations: what you would actually do in situations from Indian school and early work.

Your report gives your interests, strengths, personality and values in plain words; the career families that fit, with the reasons; how well Science, Commerce and Arts fit you; and a six month action calendar with what to do next. You keep it as a PDF.

Free tests to start with

Nine free tests each look at one area on its own.

  • Interest Explorer, about twenty minutes: sixty activities, and how much each of six kinds of work appeals to you.
  • Study Habits Snapshot, about four minutes: how you tend to go about your work, across six ways of working.
  • Subject Sorter, about five minutes: two quick questions about each of your school subjects, and your own answers handed back.

If you are under 18

You need a parent to agree, and the order depends on the test.

For Career Discovery, a parent agrees before you start. On a free test you answer first, and your result opens once a parent agrees. You need to be at least twelve to take any test.

What to do with your result

Read the reasons, not only the list.

  • Sit with a parent or teacher and read the reasons given for your top courses and careers.
  • For each course that interests you, check which Class 11 and 12 subjects it needs.
  • Try something small in the field: a project, a conversation with someone who does the work, a short course.
  • Come back to it in a year or two. Interests shift with age, and that is normal.

What any test cannot tell you

No career test can pick your stream, tell you your board or entrance marks, or promise a seat or a job. It describes how you answered, as you are now. Your interests can change, and money, place and family matter too. Use the result as one input among several.
